Google is revamping its official SEO Starter Guide, streamlining advice for modern website owners, and simplifying complex topics.
Google’s SEO Starter Guide, a critical resource for search engine optimization professionals, is undergoing a significant revision.
The impending update was announced on the latest episode of “Search Off The Record,” a podcast featuring Google’s Search Relations team members.
First launched years ago, the SEO Starter Guide aims to explain the basics of improving website visibility in Google Search results.
According to Gary Illyes and Lizzi Harvey, the existing guide needs to be updated and will see significant changes.
With over 8,000 words of advice, the current SEO Starter Guide remains one of the most visited resources on Google’s Search Central site.
“This is the third most viewed page, which is interesting to me because I would have thought maybe people read it and then they move on,” said Harvey.
The guide consistently ranks high in Google search results for keywords like “SEO,” drawing huge traffic.
Given the guide’s popularity, changes to the content and recommendations could significantly impact how new website owners approach SEO. Some strategies may be deemphasized or omitted entirely.
A key focus of the overhaul will be simplifying the content for modern users, especially those new to building websites.
The guide, known for its extensive reach and high view rates, is set to become more concise and relevant.
“Our current draft that we have right now is around the 3000 mark,” Harvey revealed, highlighting the goal to eliminate redundancy and outdated advice.
Illyes says the revised guide should focus more on general SEO concepts than technical details. For example, understanding the importance of page title tags without manually editing HTML code.
The changes reflect the rise in popularity of content management systems (CMS) like WordPress and website builders like Wix. These tools automate much of the technical SEO work, allowing users with minimal coding skills to optimize web pages.
During the episode, the hosts tackled the perennial declaration that “SEO is dead,” a statement that periodically surfaces within the industry.
Contrary to this claim, the SEO Starter Guide’s popularity and positive feedback signal a robust and ongoing interest in SEO.
“It is our top viewed guide after the home page,” Harvey stated, countering the myth and reinforcing the belief that mastering SEO is as vital as ever for online success.
The decision to streamline the SEO Starter Guide reflects a shift towards a more focused and user-friendly approach.
With information overload being a common challenge, the revised guide aims to provide clear, impactful advice without overwhelming readers.
“I don’t want to have ten different places where we’re doing… like saying the same thing in varying ways,” Harvey explained.
The podcast revealed that the updated guide would prioritize user experience and practical needs.
This includes simplifying complex topics and ensuring the guide remains accessible to beginners while providing value to seasoned professionals.
Google is expected to release a revised version of its SEO Starter Guide soon.
The upcoming guide will provide key information about current search engine optimization best practices while removing outdated advice.
This new iteration will likely become an essential resource for beginning and experienced SEO professionals looking to improve website visibility in search results.

Google reached a deal to license real-time access to Reddit conversations to show more of it in Google and for training models
Google announced a deal with Reddit to gain access to real-time access to all of its content so that Google can show even more Reddit content than it already does and to gain access to all of its content for training models.
The agreement between Google and Reddit is explicit that this will result in increased visibility for Reddit discussions in various Google products, which may include various search surfaces across a range of topics and contexts.
Google’s access to a wider range of Reddit content in a structured format will the ability of language models to understand human conversations and writing styles. AI is increasingly used in search so this could in turn affect how content is understood and ranked in Google search.
Reddit gains access to Google’s Vertex AI platform to improve search and create other “capabilities” with it. The deal is reported to be worth $60 million dollars per year for Reddit.
Reddit has become a popular destination for people to have discussions on virtually any topic, making it a such a popular destination for people seeking information that searchers append the word “Reddit” to searches to surface content directly from Reddit and avoid Google’s search results altogether.
Conversations on Reddit are also useful for training large language models because of the diversity of content topics, as a deep source of conversational data written in multiple forms of writing.
Content that is on the web is said to be unstructured data. Machines need to process unstructured data to remove the irrelevant bits like navigation and extract the main content. It also has to make sense of the upvoted and downvoted content.
Structured data however is data that’s already sorted into its component parts so that there is no ambiguity about the data.
Google now has access to all of that data in real-time and in a structured format that will make it easier for Google to make sense of the information and use it more efficiently, with what Google describes as “enhanced signals” that will help Google to display it in more useful ways.
The announcement by both Google and Reddit state that one of Google’s intentions is to show more content from Reddit.
Google explained how they will use the content:
“Over the years, we’ve seen that people increasingly use Google to search for helpful content on Reddit to find product recommendations, travel advice and much more. We know people find this information useful, so we’re developing ways to make it even easier to access across Google products. This partnership will facilitate more content-forward displays of Reddit information that will make our products more helpful for our users and make it easier to participate in Reddit communities and conversations.”
Another component of the deal mentioned by both Google and Reddit is that the partnership will help people participate in Reddit conversations.
Reddit posted:
“Our work with Google will make it easier for people to find, discover, and engage in content and communities on Reddit that are most relevant to them.”

Why is Google Podcasts shutting down?… – The Sun
ANOTHER of Google's apps is being shut down despite it being popular.
Google Podcasts will be no more, so you need to look for an alternative to listen to your favourites.
Google announced last year that the podcast app would be shutting down.
At the time they said we are "living in the golden age of podcasts" and that it was time to create a "single destination" for them.
However, Google Podcasts users are pretty upset by the news and don't want to switch over to a new app.
Google are wanting users to switch over to the YouTube Music app to listen to their podcasts instead.
This is despite Google Podcasts being downloaded more than 500million times on Google Play alone.
Fans of the former app are upset about having to move over to YouTube Music.
One user wrote on Reddit: "YouTube Music doesn't seem to have all of the podcasts available on Google Podcast.
"Either that or the search function is terrible.
"In addition, using YouTube Music for podcasts via Android Auto requires scrolling through a bunch more menus. Not great."
While another said: "YouTube Music is just awful. I hate that they're killing Google Podcasts."
A third added: "Google Podcasts low-key is one of the cleanest Google apps I've just naturally used every single day for a while now.
"YouTube music just isn't a replacement. I just want to listen to podcasts with my phone locked without a video popping up if I misclick eating up my data volume.
"Why does YouTube music have the option for videos in the first place?"
A number of podcast fans have made some suggested alternatives:
Google Podcasts first launched in 2018 and was popular with listeners.
The service has already shut down in the US but it's closing everywhere else on June 24, 2024.
This includes in UK.
Google Podcasts is the latest in a long line of gadgets and services to join the dreaded “Google Graveyard”.
According to the Killed By Google website, the number currently stands at 295.
Here are some you may remember.

Kim Soo Mi's deep bond with daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyo Rim, resurfaces in the wake of her passing – allkpop

The late actress Kim Soo Mi’s deep bond with her daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyo Rim, has resurfaced, bringing a sense of sadness to fans.
On the morning of October 27 at 11 AM, Kim Soo Mi’s funeral was held at Hanyang University Hospital in Sageun-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Broadcasters Jang Dong Min, Jung Jun Ha, and Yoon Jung Soo, who had been close to her and were seen as “adopted sons,” carried her casket. Seo Hyo Rim, who was as close to Kim Soo Mi as a daughter, cried out, “Mom, don’t go,” “How could you leave after going through so much?” and “I’m so sorry, Mom; you worked so hard.”
Seo Hyo Rim married Kim Soo Mi’s son, Jung Myung Ho, CEO of Napalkkot F&B, in 2019, and the couple have a daughter together. Even before the marriage, Seo Hyo Rim had been close to Kim Soo Mi, and after joining the family, she affectionately called her “Mom,” showcasing their close bond.
Kim Soo Mi’s affection for Seo Hyo Rim was evident as she even gifted her a house.
In January 2023, Kim shared her perspective on KBS 1TV’s ‘Morning Forum,’ saying, “My mother gave me so much love, so when I look at my daughter-in-law, I try to give her the same love I received. I see her as an equal—woman to woman.” She continued, “My son was recently caught up in a media scandal involving a fraud case, although he was later cleared. I thought my daughter-in-law might be hurt, so I gifted her a house (in her name). I told her, ‘If things ever go wrong and you get divorced, the law will entitle you to just 50 million KRW (~36,149 USD) as alimony. Use this to live well with the baby,’ though that was just a precaution. They’re happily married, but I wanted to show her the love I’d received.”
Early on the morning of October 25, Kim Soo Mi suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was taken to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in Seocho-gu, Seoul, where she ultimately passed away at the age of 75. Her family reported the cause of death as high blood sugar shock.
In May, Kim Soo Mi had been hospitalized due to fatigue, which led her to step back from her activities. In August, during a home shopping broadcast, she appeared to tremble and spoke slowly, which raised concerns about her health. At that time, Kim Soo Mi reassured to media outlet Star News, explaining, “It’s just that my pronunciation is off because of dental implants.” Barely a month after dismissing health rumors, her sudden passing has left many in deep sadness.
