The conditions were first-class, the stadium perfect, yet the performances often disappointing: Chemnitzer FC is stumbling at the bottom of the Regionalliga Nordost and had to wait until matchday 14 for their first home win.
The relief was evident on Robert Zickert’s face. The 34-year-old defender, the oldest and most experienced player of CFC following the injuries to Tobias Müller and Dejan Bozic, summed it up after the much-needed 1-0 victory against VSG Altglienicke: “We’re on matchday 14 and fighting against relegation; after this win, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”
Team spirit, passion, and effort were the keys to success on Friday evening (November 1) in chilly Chemnitz. Vice-captain Zickert led by example – both on the pitch and vocally. In hectic moments, the veteran tried to exude calm, without wrapping his teammates in cotton wool – and even before the whistle blew, the team was switched on.
The match-winner Jong-min Seo, who scored the only goal of the match in the seventh minute, revealed in an interview with SPORT IM OSTEN: “The atmosphere in training wasn’t great; there were also talks in the dressing room from experienced players.” Those strong words paid off. The Chemnitz side compensated for their lack of ease with grit. They ran, tackled, and celebrated!
It was no coincidence that Seo decided the game with his goal. The 22-year-old has only been in Chemnitz for four weeks, having come from unemployment, and he quickly became a game changer. A stroke of luck for the Himmelblauen (the Sky Blues).
Seo initiated the goal himself. After winning the ball, he passed it to the right wing and headed the ensuing pinpoint cross into the net. A well-rehearsed move! “It was what the coach expected from us,” Seo modestly said after scoring his second goal of the season in just five games. He is thus the top scorer for CFC. The problem for the Saxons lies in their finishing, having scored only seven goals in 13 matches, which is a league low.
CFC coach Benjamin Duda, who took over from Christian Tiffert a few weeks ago, did not start singing praises after the much-deserved three points. “Football is a day-to-day business. It can change quickly. If you win, you’re celebrated to the skies; if you draw or lose, it’s always embarrassing and too little for outsiders.” He sees the overall process over the last eight weeks, noting that there have been many “more good and very good things than worrying ones, which is why this win is a reward for the last eight weeks.”
Duda knows that the pendulum can swing back in another direction swiftly and makes it clear: “We want and need to continue next Friday.” The CFC will then travel to the classic encounter in Leipzig, where league leaders Lok await.
Duda will have to make himself comfortable in the traditional wooden stand. The Chemnitz coach saw red against the Berliners in a heated closing phase because, according to referee Johannes Drößler (FSV Wacker Gotha), he deliberately delayed the game by playing the ball away with his left arm rather than catching it. It was a bizarre and bitter moment, as this season, a coach’s “ball away” actions are punishable by a red card. However, it was the only downside on a night when many stones of relief tumbled in Chemnitz.
