Google’s Search Off The Record podcast sheds light on the search engine’s evolving ranking systems and updates.
In the most recent episode of Google’s podcast “Search Off the Record,” Search Liaison Danny Sullivan joins the show to discuss a timely topic.
Coinciding with the rollout of Google’s August 2023 core algorithm update, Sullivan addresses common questions and misconceptions about ranking systems.
This article overviews the 34-minute episode, highlighting the most relevant insights.
Sullivan pointed out that Google’s ranking system isn’t one algorithm but many systems working together.
He states:
“A lot of people think, ‘Oh, there’s the Google algorithm, and that’s it, it’s this big giant thing.’ And of course, as we all know, there’s multiple systems that all come into play.”
Google discussed the change from referring to Google’s algorithm updates by specific names to viewing them as ongoing ranking systems.
For example, the update formerly known as “Panda” is now seen as a persistent, integral part of a ranking system.
This reflects how these algorithm changes have become fully incorporated into and continuously optimize Google’s search results.
Google’s ranking systems are listed in an official document, which includes current and retired systems, showing how search has evolved.
However, the documentation doesn’t list every ranking system, only some key examples.
On the purpose of Google’s documentation on ranking systems, Sullivan states:
“It seemed like it would be useful to list a lot of these so that people understood them and especially I think for SEOs and creators, for them to understand some of the ones that get involved with ranking on a recurring basis.”
The podcast touched on SEO professionals’ mistaken beliefs about ranking algorithm updates.
One misconception is that each new update necessitates reworking your SEO strategy. However, Sullivan disagrees with this view.
On how to react to a new ranking update, Sullivan states :
“If you’ve seen a change after one of these systems has been launched or an updated system been launched then that’s probably a sign that, well, maybe you’re not as aligned as you should be with what these things have been looking for with what Google’s generally trying to look for.”
Google aims to communicate more often about its ranking systems, but Sullivan clarified that this doesn’t indicate it’s making more changes than usual.
When asked how SEO professionals might respond to Google being more transparent, Sullivan joked that some might try to ‘game’ or manipulate things to rank higher.
However, he clarified that Google provides this information to help people improve their content for people, not just chase rankings.
“I think that I feel like more of our shift these days is less about these are the specific things and more of these are the mindsets you should be following.”
Sullivan said if SEOs use the guidelines to create better, more helpful content, there’s no problem with that.
The conversation concluded with Sullivan offering the following advice: Create genuine, engaging content tailored to your target audience.
He believes that the most successful websites are the ones that manage to produce content not solely to rank in search engines but also to provide real value to users.
“Now more than ever, having that authentic content that you created because you have an actual audience in mind that you know would come to it directly, that is your way forward as you try to navigate this world of how ranking systems are evolving.”
While staying informed is essential, Sullivan says most updates don’t require dramatic alterations to your overall SEO approach.

Apple has introduced a new feature for Apple Podcasts in iOS 17.4 that provides a transcript for seemingly nearly every podcast.
Machine translation has improved significantly in recent years, to the point that spoken word should be relatively non-trivial to transcribe into text. Apple’s work on machine learning models and artificial intelligence has led to a new feature for Apple Podcasts.
Users testing iOS 17.4 beta 1 have discovered nearly all of the podcasts in their library show transcripts. There seem to be some that don’t, and any added from an external source like a URL won’t.
The feature is new and still in beta, so there isn’t any information on implementation or expected accuracy. Users should expect most, if not all, shows delivered through Apple’s podcast network to be transcribed.
Limitations and other details will likely be shared by Apple once iOS 17.4 is released to the public in March. The update is primarily focused on updates pertaining to EU regulation.

In the 10th episode, Yoo Jae-seok, Yoo Yeon-seok, and ‘Friend of the Gap’ Lee Seo-jin visited the niche of the fencing academy teacher and daycare center teacher and gave them full luck and a pleasant tiki-taka.

Yoo Jae-seok and Yoo Yeon-seok welcomed their friend Lee Seo-jin with a picnic opening on the bright lawn. When Yoo Jae-seok expressed his expectation, saying, `The person who is coming out today is my favorite brother, but it’s okay.’ Lee Seo-jin responded by saying, `Why are you sitting on the floor. Let’s stand up and grumble, “What is a mat?” and then lift Yoo Jae-seok up and down as a tsundere moment to wipe Yoo Jae-seok’s mouth.

Google shares strategies for managing outdated website content rather than deleting it.
In the latest episode of the Search Off The Record podcast, Google Search Relations team members John Mueller and Lizzi Sassman did a deep dive into dealing with “content decay” on websites.
Outdated content is a natural issue all sites face over time, and Google has outlined strategies beyond just deleting old pages.
While removing stale content is sometimes necessary, Google recommends taking an intentional, format-specific approach to tackling content decay.
Google advises against immediately removing content that becomes obsolete, like materials referencing discontinued products or services.
Removing content too soon could confuse readers and lead to a poor experience, Sassman explains:
“So, if I’m trying to find out like what happened, I almost need that first thing to know. Like, “What happened to you?” And, otherwise, it feels almost like an error. Like, “Did I click a wrong link or they redirect to the wrong thing?””
Sassman says you can avoid confusion by providing transitional “explainer” pages during deprecation periods.
A temporary transition guide informs readers of the outdated content while steering them toward updated resources.
Sassman continues:
“That could be like an intermediary step where maybe you don’t do that forever, but you do it during the transition period where, for like six months, you have them go funnel them to the explanation, and then after that, all right, call it a day. Like enough people know about it. Enough time has passed. We can just redirect right to the thing and people aren’t as confused anymore.”
For reference guides and content that provide authoritative overviews, Google suggests updating information to maintain accuracy and relevance.
However, for archival purposes, major updates may warrant creating a new piece instead of editing the original.
Sassman explains:
“I still want to retain the original piece of content as it was, in case we need to look back or refer to it, and to change it or rehabilitate it into a new thing would almost be worth republishing as a new blog post if we had that much additional things to say about it.”
Google recommends removing pages in cases where the outdated information is potentially harmful.
Sassman says she arrived at this conclusion when deciding what to do with a guide involving obsolete structured data:
“I think something that we deleted recently was the “How to Structure Data” documentation page, which I thought we should just get rid of it… it almost felt like that’s going to be more confusing to leave it up for a period of time.
And actually it would be negative if people are still adding markup, thinking they’re going to get something. So what we ended up doing was just delete the page and redirect to the changelog entry so that, if people clicked “How To Structure Data” still, if there was a link somewhere, they could still find out what happened to that feature.”
To keep your content current, Google advises implementing a system for auditing aging content and flagging it for review.
Sassman says she sets automated alerts for pages that haven’t been checked in set periods:
“Oh, so we have a little robot to come and remind us, “Hey, you should come investigate this documentation page. It’s been x amount of time. Please come and look at it again to make sure that all of your links are still up to date, that it’s still fresh.””
